When a pawnbroker is authenticating a Rolex watch, they will be looking for ‘clues’. Other than the obvious method of looking at the watch itself, the pawnbroker will also examine the associated items to ascertain if they are contemporary to the Rolex watch. For example, they will check if the box is the correct style for the watch, and whether the guarantee number on the papers match the number that has been engraved on the watch. All Rolex watches are provided with an information booklet; if present, you will have another piece of the jigsaw.

When buying a vintage Rolex the ‘box papers’ are highly useful because they assist the buyer in establishing whether the watch is authentic or not. Although a watch made in 1960 will not have a valid warranty, but the card will still have the serial number.
