Description
Iolite is a violet-blue gemstone variety of the mineral cordierite, famed for displaying strong pleochroism showing different colours like blue, violet, or clear-yellow depending on the viewing angle.
Historically nicknamed the "Viking's compass," it was reportedly used as a natural polarising filter to locate the sun on cloudy days.
