The Rolex Oyster bracelet, a hallmark of precision and innovation, has a storied history dating back to its debut in the late 1930s. Originally designed for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, this bracelet quickly became synonymous with durability and elegance. Crafted with a robust, flat three-piece link structure, it offered an unprecedented blend of comfort and resilience. Over the decades, the Oyster bracelet has evolved, incorporating advanced materials and enhanced clasp mechanisms, yet it has always retained its classic aesthetic. Celebrated for its seamless integration with the iconic Oyster case, the bracelet continues to be a testament to Rolex's enduring legacy of watchmaking excellence. The Rolex oyster bracelet was originally manufactured by Gay Frerès and patented by Rolex in 1947. Due to Rolex wanting all producing of their watches to remain in house, Rolex ended up buying Gay Frerès in 1998. The Rolex Oyster bracelet is available in steel, platinum, yellow gold, white gold, Everose and even two-tone Rolesor (yellow or rose).
The Rolex Oysterflex bracelet, introduced in 2015, represents a significant innovation within the Rolex watch bracelet history. It combines the robustness of a metal bracelet with the comfort of a rubber strap. Designed initially for the Yacht-Master collection, this unique bracelet is crafted from high-performance materials, making it extremely durable and resistant to environmental effects such as being waterproof. Inside, it features a metal blade that provides the structural integrity and flexibility associated with traditional metal Rolex bracelets. This blend of materials ensures both durability and comfort, making the Oysterflex an ideal choice for active lifestyles while maintaining the elegance and sophistication expected from Rolex.
The Rolex Jubilee bracelet was introduced in 1945 to commemorate Rolex's 40th anniversary. Initially launched with the Datejust model, this iconic bracelet features a distinctive five-link construction, providing high level comfort and flexibility. The Jubilee bracelet's intricate design combines smaller, polished centre links with larger, brushed outer links, creating a unique and sophisticated appearance. Known for its enduring style and exceptional durability, the Jubilee bracelet has become a symbol of luxury and refinement, perfectly complementing Rolex's esteemed timepieces. The Rolex Jubilee bracelet comes in steel, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and two-tone steel and gold.
The Pearlmaster bracelet is the rarest Rolex watch bracelet currently available. It is only paired with the Rolex Pearlmaster and was first seen in 1992. Only made with precious metals, this five-link bracelet is seen with the Crownclasp making it a sleek and sophisticated Rolex watch bracelet.
The Rolex President Bracelet—a timeless emblem of sophistication and prestige. Created in 1956, this iconic Rolex bracelet has seamlessly blended luxury and functionality over the decades. Its hallmark three semi-circular links exude strength and refinement, while the concealed Crownclasp ensures a seamless fit and comfort. Each material is selected and engineered to uphold Rolex’s commitment to excellence. The last number in each Rolex bracelet code refers to the material it is made from:
Some people disagree on whether to call them a strap or a bracelet. In the Rolex community, a Rolex watch is generally referred to having a bracelet not a strap with Rolex also calling them a bracelet. It is determined that a Rolex bracelet is named so due to the type of clasp, look and function being similar to a bracelet as well as being made from metal. Originally Rolex watches were all made with a leather strap until the Oyster bracelet was made and the style became the bracelets that Rolex are commonly known for. One famous Rolex watch with a leather strap is the Paul Newman Daytona – Paul Newman famously wore his Rolex Daytona on a leather bund. This is not to say that no Rolex watches come with a strap now though. The watches released by Rolex at the Watches and Wonders event in 2024 included the Rolex 1908 with a leather strap featuring a standard buckle design and no metal within the Rolex watch bands.
Although generally people will keep the original bracelet that came with their Rolex, some people like to change their bracelets to different colours and styles including switching to a strap style that is normally used on watches. This is however disagreed with by some collectors as they believe a Rolex watch should remain with all the original parts. Swapping the bracelet on your Rolex watch can give it new life and even completely change the look of the watch. This can be useful for a pre-owned Rolex that may have a bit of wear from time on the original bracelet or you may want to modernise it by purchasing a new watch bracelet that suits your needs and preferences.
Begin by selecting a replacement bracelet. Swapping a Rolex bracelet can be done with an authentic Rolex bracelet or a third-party Rolex strap however, we recommend keeping the original bracelet that came with the watch to maintain its value. Prepare your workspace with a soft, clean surface to prevent scratches. Using a spring bar tool, or a pin/ paperclip, carefully compress the spring bars located at the lug holes to retract one end of the spring bar and free your bracelet. Then repeat on the other side keeping the spring bars separate for later. If your Rolex watch doesn’t have lug holes, then push the spring bar away from the lug on the case back until it dislodges on all 4 lugs. With your new Rolex watch strap, place the old spring bars into the new Rolex strap and align on the watch. Using the tool, press the spring bar back and push on the Rolex bracelet until the spring slides into place.
Before a Rolex watch bracelet is available to purchase, it undergoes rigorous testing throughout the process of the making of a Rolex. Each bracelet is examined and scrutinised from every angle to ensure it is flawless before being packaged into the Rolex watch boxes. Beyond human touch, Rolex employs advanced robotic systems to simulate wear and tear, replicating a multitude of everyday movements in harsh, abrasive environments. This process accelerates deterioration, allowing Rolex to identify and address potential weaknesses. Additionally, the bracelets, complete with their clasps, are exposed to random movements to ensure that all screws in the removable links remain securely in place. These exhaustive tests guarantee that every Rolex bracelet not only meets but exceeds the highest standards of durability and performance, embodying the luxury and reliability for which the brand is renowned. This extreme durability and high-level craftsmanship means that your second-hand Rolex watch bracelet can continue to function as good as new with a well maintains Rolex bracelet lasting generations.
